Every September, Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are required to mail an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) to every enrollee. It documents everything about your plan that will be different starting January 1. It is also one of the most commonly ignored pieces of mail seniors receive — which is exactly how people end up surprised by changes they could have planned around.
The ANOC is often long, uses plan-specific formatting, and arrives during a season already full of open enrollment mailers and TV ads. It is easy to assume it is just more marketing and set it aside.
If your ANOC shows a meaningful negative change, the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7) is your window to switch to a different plan for the following year without needing a special qualifying event. Waiting past that window generally means living with the change until the next enrollment season.
You do not need to read the entire document line by line. Scanning those five items against what you remember from this year takes a few minutes and can catch a change that would otherwise blindside you in January. If anything looks confusing or the wording is unclear, that is exactly the kind of question worth asking a licensed agent before the enrollment window closes.
